Recently, I heard that getting into a master’s program for archives is getting tougher.

This is probably a good thing.

I only say this because I know firsthand how hard it is to get into the archives profession. It’s excruciating. But having a community of archivists has kept me up-to-date on the latest chatter, encouraged me, given me advice on phone interviews, and done anything in their power to help me. I really can’t say enough about them.

Getting to the point…

While I know that the conferences are meant to spread information and ideas throughout the community, but I have found that they are extremely useful for creating a community.

The Spontaneous Scholarship Fund helps those archivists/aspiring archivists that cannot currently afford to go to the SAA conference. Hopefully, while attending the conference, the scholarship recipients will not only learn something, but also become a greater part of the community.

Whoa, that was pretty serious for a not so serious photo book. To lighten the mood, take a look at the preview for “Closed Stacks, Open Shutters.”

I want people to be able to take pictures at the various conferences that are going on in the next few weeks. New due date is, well, how about we just say Halloween. October 31, 2011.

I also want to let you know that the project is not excluding students OR records managers. I feel like if anyone related to our profession wants to participate, they should be able to. I’ve only recently have 2 gentlemen promise some pictures but I’d love to have more. Silly is sexy, it’s not like you have to act like a beefcake. Actually, that could be pretty cool too if you ham it up a little…

I have loved all the pictures I have gotten so far, and I can’t wait to get the book out there

The deadline for the book is tentatively set for the 17th of this month. If you are planning something but can’t get it in before the 17th let me know I’ll make an exception. But tell me so i know to wait for it!

The calendar is still the priority, but since we have had so much interest it would be a shame to not include as many people as possible. So I’m going to have an open photo call.

Strangely, to print a small photo book is a little bit cheaper than a calendar, so the price will reflect that. I’m hoping this will satisfy those that took the survey and said they didn’t want to pay $20 for the calendar. But once again, all proceeds will go to the Spontaneous Scholarship Fund.

The photos need to be of good quality, the printer requires at least 300 dpi. No phone pictures will be accepted.

Pictures in the archives are a plus, but not required, same thing with “nude” pictures.

Once I have a good amount (tentatively 2 weeks from today), I will close the call and pick the photos that will be in the book. I would also like to post the majority of the ones not chosen for the book on this page. Of course I will ask permission before putting ANYTHING on the internet. No names will be included in the book and on the blog unless you tell me in the email that you want your name with your photo.

I’m also considering a contest for the cover photo/picture (it could be a drawing/painting technically). I don’t think it should be a person, but of course it needs to be related to archives. If you have something you think will be great for the cover, please send it to the same email address.

Once again, the calendar is still very much the priority. Emily is planning a great spread and it will no doubt be amazing in order to meet her standards. The book is the calendar’s slightly off-beat cousin. I just want to make sure everyone can be involved.

So get creative, have fun, and please don’t send me anything that lacks strategically placed Hollinger boxes. I don’t want to think of that if I meet you at SAA.

We want this calendar to be awesome. Because of that, we’re doing some pretty extensive planning. Emily has some things in mind that she wants to try out and really get right before we ask for photos. We are going to ask for some group shots (to get more people in the pictures and to actually portray something) so get ready to gather your archival friends.

We are also planning on making it a 2013 calendar, ready to sell in May 2012 so that it can raise funds for SAA 2012. We couldn’t imagine doing a 2012 calendar since it is nearly October, it would be a pretty tight squeeze.

Look for our announcement concerning the photographs next week.

Yesterday, Rebecca tweeted “Hey archivists, we can make our own sexy calendar, right?”

My response: “damn right!”

But she needed help. So, after some hesitation and lots of pre-planning (thanks to Rebecca and Jennifer S.) and agreeing to collaborate with Emily (known as watzanem on twitter), we decided to go for it.

Hey, it’s for a good cause after all!

Emily, who is wonderful and artistic and all the things I’m bad at, will be doing outreach and (hopefully) arranging for some photographs to be taken at conferences. And probably taking over with the general design of the calendar.

Hopefully, Rebecca will still be up to writing some sexy haikus.
